Heartwarming and heart breaking stories are the backbone of this week’s new films. The lives of children are at stake in a new Spike Lee joint and an action packed thriller written and produced by Sylvester Stallone.
A drug dealer tries to take down an undercover cop by kidnapping his daughter in Homefront. The former DEA-agent and single dad thought he escaped the troubles of the city when he moved to the peaceful bayou, but he soon becomes the target of a psycho meth dealer. The action thriller is written and produced by Sylvester Stallone and stars Jason Statham, James Franco, Winona Ryder and Kate Bosworth. It runs for one hour and forty minutes. The film is rated R for violence, language, drugs and sex.
A man, accused of killing his wife, is taken off the radar and kept in an undisclosed, tiny room for twenty years in Oldboy. When he is released, his daughter is kidnapped by the mysterious person who held him captive for two decades. Josh Brolin, Elizabeth Olsen and Samuel L. Jackson star in the Spike Lee directed film. The one hour and twenty-eight minute suspense thriller is rated R for violence, sex, nudity and language.
A teen, who grew up on the streets of Baltimore, spends Christmas in New York City with his estranged, religious relatives in Black Nativity. The strict, faith based household is too much for him to take and has him yearning to go back home to be with his mother. Spending time with the Reverend and his wife, however, causes him to change his spirit and outlook on life. The musical drama stars Forest Whitaker, Angela Bassett, Jennifer Hudson, Tyrese Gibson, Jacob Latimore and Nas. The PG film plays for one hour and thirty-five minutes.
Take a look at everyday life in rural France with Cousin Jules. Director Dominque Benicheti filmed his cousin and his wife over a course of five years. The one hour and thirty-one minute documentary follows Jules as he works in his blacksmith shop and his wife takes care of the household. The unrated film is available in limited theaters.
Female punk rock singer and feminist Kathleen Hanna is the focus of the documentary The Punk Singer. Hanna is the lead singer of the band Bikini Kills and the group Le Tigre. She is known as the outspoken leader of the riot grrrl movement. The unrated film features never before seen footage. It’s playing for one hour and twenty minutes in limited theaters.
The emotional tales told in this week’s new releases are broken up by comedies and family films next week. Tim Allen, Liam Neeson, Steve Buscemi and Laurence Fishburne star in family and animal friendly films hitting theaters on Dec. 6.
