Vice President Joe Biden came up short during his last run for the oval office and he came up short again at a new sub shop in Washington D.C. on Thursday. He didn’t have enough money in his wallet to cover the full bill, so he had to ask a staffer for assistance.

Biden went to the new Capriotti's, a sub chain that began in his home state of Delaware. According to the Associated Press, Biden said that the subs were introduced on Union Street in Wilmington, “where I hang out.” He then declared, “The president's waiting. I'm having lunch with him today.”

Biden must have forgotten how expensive Capriotti’s subs are, since his four-sandwich order reached $56.25 and he didn’t have the cash. The New York Daily News notes that when an employee said the subs were on the house, Biden refused the offer.

“No, no, no, I’m not taking it,” he replied. “In Delaware, you pay. It’s simple.” He then turned to one of his staffers, who happened to have enough cash to make up the difference.

When he left the shop, he began shouting sub suggestions to the crowd that gathered. He told them that you need to get hot peppers, “But not everybody understands that. You know what I mean?"

He wasn’t so kind to the Washington Nationals Presidential mascots, who showed up as well. He told them that they could get in trouble there, since “They're all Phillies fans, you know what I mean?”
