Virginia senator Creigh Deeds, who ran for governor in 2009, is in the hospital after a fight with his son left multiple stab wounds on his body. His son killed himself after the fight.
State police say that Deeds’ cousin discovered the Virginia politician walking down the street with multiple wounds from his head and chest. He was bleeding pretty badly at that time.
When cops arrived to Deeds’ home in Millboro, Austin "Gus" Deeds was still alive but could not be saved from an apparent gunshot wound to the head, CNN reports.
"Based on the evidence we have, we are looking at this as an attempted murder and suicide," said Virginia State Police spokeswoman Corinne Geller on Tuesday.
Deeds was airlifted to University of Virginia Medical Center in Charlottesville after his cousin took him to a nearby farm and called 911. He was improving from critical condition to fair by Tuesday afternoon.
New York Times notes Gus, 24, might’ve underwent an emergency psychiatric evaluation on Monday but was released due to the unavailability of hospital beds, but Gellar could not confirm this on account of state law barring the disclosure of mental health information.
