Authorities are saying that Sen. Creigh Deeds was stabbed by his son Gus on Tuesday morning in his home.

As previously reported, Deeds was rushed to the University of Virginia Medical Center Tuesday morning after being stabbed. His son was in the house, dead of a gunshot wound.

Police at the time said in a release, "Virginia State Police are on the scene of an assault of a state legislator that took place Tuesday morning. Senator Creigh Deeds has been transported to U.Va Hospital in Charlottesville for treatment of serious injuries sustained in the assault at his residence."

Now it seems that the attack was actually "an attempted murder-suicide," Virginia State Police spokesperson Corinne Geller said, The New York Times reports.

His 24-year-old son stabbed Deeds several times in the head and upper torso before taking his own life with a gun. Geller would not comment any further on the issue due to state law over mental health information disclosure. Gus was still alive when police arrived at the house, but died soon after.

There are unconfirmed reports that Gus Deeds underwent an ordered psychiatric evaluation Monday, but was released soon after due to lack of available clinical beds.
