Sen. Creigh Deeds, a Democrat from Virginia, was critically wounded while at home and his son, Gus, was found dead, Tuesday morning.
The Richmond Times-Dispatch is reporting that the senator was hospitalized at the University of Virginia Medical Center. Authorities also said they are still trying to determine what exactly happened.
A Virginia State Police news release said, "Virginia State Police are on the scene of an assault of a state legislator that took place Tuesday morning. Senator Creigh Deeds has been transported to U.Va Hospital in Charlottesville for treatment of serious injuries sustained in the assault at his residence."
Governor Bob McDonnell released a statement saying, "In this tough and sad time, our thoughts and prayers are with the Deeds family. The news from this morning is utterly heartbreaking."
According to The Washington Post, the police were called to the Deeds home around 7:25 a.m.
Police would not confirm the dead body found belonged to the Deeds' son, but it is being reported that Gus was found inside the house, dead of a gunshot wound.
Deeds is mostly known for his unsuccessful campaign to become governor in 2009, where he lost to McDonnell, by a wide margin. Deeds also lost to McDonnell in 2005 for an attorney general race.
