Despite worries that windy weather would ruin the day, the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade went on as scheduled Thursday morning in New York City.

As previously reported, people were worried that the stormy weather that swept from the West coast towards the East would impact the parade.

Earlier in the week there were severe weather warnings in parts of the country and New York City was expected to have 15-40 mph winds, which could have made it difficult to wrangle the giant balloons that are the star of the parade every year.

Thankfully, the parade went off and the 16 helium-filled balloons filled the sky above the streets in the city, The Associated Press reports.

Wind was still as expected at 26 mph and so balloon handlers did their best to keep a tight grip on each balloon. They did a fairly good job, though the Sonic the Hedgehog was snagged on a tree while rounding a corner.

"We thought they'd find a way to pull it off," said spectator John Mispagel, from San Jose, Calif.. "It's really fun seeing so many people having such a great time."
