The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug has crossed the $300 million mark worldwide.
The sequel to The Hobbit is the continuation of the story that started in The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey. The novel has been adapted for the big screen and will be presented in three different movies with Peter Jackson at the helm.
Jackson is known for his creative vision and direction behind the Lord of the Rings trilogy.
Smaug is on track to take the first place position at the domestic box office, Variety reported.
In second place will likely be Anchorman 2, staring Will Ferrel. The new comedy pulled in $26 million for Friday through Sunday with about $40 million total for a five day period.
Also released this weekend was David O' Russell's American Hustle, which was given a theatrical expansion and is on track to earn around $20 million at the box office, The Hollywood Reporter added.
The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug stars Ian McKellen, Martin Freeman and Richard Armitage.
