Robert Mandel, film and television director, will be stepping down as the dean of the AFI Conservatory at the end of June 2014. The American Film Institute announced Monday. Mandel has been the dean of AFI for the past nine years.
LA Times reported that Mandel will be stepping down to go back to directing but he will remain on the faculty.
AFI President Bob Gazzale, spoke about Mandel had done for the school. "His contributions to AFI have been extraordinary, and we are proud and honored to know they will continue through his role on the faculty,” said Gazzale.
While Mandel was dean of the school he attracted talent such as Oscar-winning director, James L. Brooks and dozen more talented artist in the film and television industry, Variety added.
The director himself attended AFI and graduated back in 1979. Mandel is known for his work directing at Manhattan Theatre Club and popular TV shows such as, Lost.
No announcement has been made regarding who will take over the role as dean when Mandel leaves.
