The Smithsonian National Zoo finally named its female 100-day-old giant panda cub Bao Bao, which means "treasure" or "precious."
According to the Associated Press, the Smithsonian received over 123,000 online votes on what the name should be. Voters were given the choice between Ling Hua, Long Yun, Mulan, Bao Bao and Zhen Bao. The winning name was suggested by Friends of the National Zoo, a group that fundraises for the zoo, reports the Baltimore Sun.
A naming ceremony took place Sunday, honoring the Chinese tradition of 100 days after birth. The celebration “represents the wish that the baby will grow up in happiness and good health and that it will live as long as over 100 years,” said Chinese Ambassador Cui Tiankai.
