The Berlin International Film Festival will be hosting the world premiere of the uncut first part of Lars Von Trier’s sex epic Nymphomaniac in February. The film will be released in the U.S. in March and April in two parts.
Organizers said that the film will be screened out of competition. It stars Charlotte Gainsbourg as Joe, a nymphomaniac who recounts her life-long obsession with sex from her teen years to adulthood. The cast includes Stellan Skarsgård, Shia LaBeouf, Christian Slater, Willem DaFoe, Uma Thurman, Udo Kier, Stacy Martin, Mia Goth and Jamie Bell.
Berlinale director Dieter Kosslick praised Von Trier’s film as “impressive and radical,” noting that Von Trier was first invited to the festival in 1984.
Magnolia Films announced earlier this month that Nymphomaniac the two parts will be released in the U.S. on March 12 and April 18, respectively. In total, the shorter theatrical cut runs four hours and will open in the director’s native Denmark on Christmas Day. A five-hour long version is expected to be screened at other festivals, including Cannes.
Magnolia will also be releasing the films on iTunes before the theatrical releases, with part one available on March 6 and part two on April 3.
This year's Berlin festival will also host premiers of The Monuments Men and The Grand Budapest Hotel. It runs from Feb. 6 to Feb. 20.
