HBO films have announced that a biopic telling the story of Mae West is now in production. The film now has its leading lady; Better Midler will be playing Mae West.

William Friedkin, who is known for his work on The Exorcist, will direct and produce Mae West. Midler will also be an executive producer on the project, reported Deadline. Along with Friedkin and Midler, Jerry Weintraub, who was behind the HBO’s biopic Behind the Candelabra, is also producing.

Even though the project is only in production, it has a strong chance of being greenlight. Fridkein assembled the project and then brought it to HBO, Variety added.

The HBO project will be based on West’s autobiography, Goodness Had Nothing To Do With It. The story chronicles West’s rise to fame when she arrive in New York after writing and starring her scandalous Broadway show Sex.

Her career was launched on Broadway, which opened the doors to Hollywood for her.

Midler is known for her work in The Women, Hocus Pocus and The Stepford Wives
