Britney Spears kicked off her Las Vegas residency last night with an extravagant, 90-minute show that was filled with the songs that have made her a pop star. The show only included two songs from her new album, Britney Jean.
The Britney: Piece of Me show is being staged at Planet Hollywood Resort and Casino’s AXIS Theatre. According to Billboard’s review, the show was different from her last tour, which was to support Femme Fatale. Those shows featured plenty of tracks from the then-new album and some surprises for fans. But Piece of Me is clearly designed to appeal to the casual Sears fan, so the only Britney Jean songs she performed were the singles “Work Bitch” and “Perfume.”
Spears started with “Work Bitch” before going into “Womanizer.” The choreography was influenced by her music videos. Other songs she did included “3,” “Oops!…I Did It Again” and “Baby One More Time.”
Billboard noted that the majority of the show appeared to be lip-synced. “Me Against the Music” being one of the rare songs where the audience could hear her actually singing, although there were a few other instances where her vocals were audible.
The Associated Press reported that the show seemed more like some of the other extravagant shows on the Vegas strip and that clips from her old music videos were often used.
Selena Gomez, Miley Cyrus, and Katy Perry were all spotted in the audience last night.
Spears, 32, has three more shows before Jan. 1 and then takes a break until Jan. 29. She has agreed to do 50 more shows in 2014 and another set in 2015.
