The United Kingdom’s Brit Awards, the music industry top awards in England, adds some of the top U.S. musicians with Katy Perry and now Bruno Mars set to perform in the February show.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Mars is the latest addition following Perry and Sheffield’s Artic Monkeys who have had a troubled past with the show in the past.
The Independent noted Artic Monkeys snubbed the awards in 2006 where they won for Breakthrough Artist, dressed as the cast of Wizard of Oz in 2007 via a rude video message, and gave a sarcastic acceptance speech in person dressed as country squires in 2008. Now given the opportunity to open the show with a live performance was too good for the band to pass up.
Chairman Christian Tattersfield stated that even though the 34-year-old event has grown with the modern age, it has been subject to criticism for being too dull. Even with that though the recent show had its highest viewership figures for the last decade.
This past year’s awards included U.S. artists Taylor Swift and Justin Timberlake performing, and also had state-side artists Frank Ocean and Lana Del Rey winning awards.
The Brit Awards are held in London and will be held on February 19, 2014.
