An all star cast is reportedly being assembled for Triple Nine, a long-gestating project from Lawless director John Hillcoat. The police drama could star Michael B. Jordan and Chiwetel Ejiofor, two of this year’s awards contenders. Casey Affleck, Cate Blanchett and Christoph Waltz are also in talks to star in the police drama.
On Friday, TheWrap reported that the actors were in talks, with Affleck being picked to replace Sons of Anarchy’s Charlie Hunnam. The film will focus on a young LAPD officer (Affleck) who is targeted by thieves to take police attention away from a heist they’re hoping to pull off.
Ejiofor will play the criminal mastermind, while Jordan is set to play a cop within Ejiofor’s group. He pretends to be working with Affleck’s character, but is really working to set up the plan.
The film’s title refers to the police code for a fellow officer needing assistance.
According to IndieWire, the project is being financed by Megan Ellison under her Panorama Media banner. Anonymous Content’s Keith Redmon, Brad Dorros and Steve Golin are producing.
Jordan and Ejiofor are expected to be in the running for Oscar nominations. Ejiofor starred in Steve McQueen’s acclaimed 12 Years A Slave, while Jordan played Oscar Grant in Ryan Coogler’s first film, Fruitvale Station. Affleck also gave an acclaimed performance in Out of the Furnace with Christian Bale.
