A distraught father threw his three-year-old son from a Manhattan high-rise building before falling to his own death a short time later. The man, Dmitriy Kanarikov of Brooklyn and a Ukrainian immigrant, was involved in a bitter custody dispute with his estranged wife, Svetlana Bukharina.
Kanarikov, 35, was supposed to drop his son, Kirill, off with Bukharina on the East Side at 1 p.m. on Sunday, reports The New York Post. Instead, though, he went to 124 W. 60th St., where he is seen on a security camera with Kirill holding his hand at 11:45 a.m. He then went to the top floor of the South Park Tower, where he three Kirill to his death. According to the Post’s law enforcement sources, Kanarikov jumped from the building himself at 12:05 p.m., falling onto a fourth-floor landing, dying instantly.
Kirill landed on a sixth-floor landing and was rushed to Roosevelt Hospital, but it was impossible to save the child.
The New York Daily News reports that just three months ago, Kanarikov wrote on Facebook that he was devoted to being the best father and husband possible. In March, his wife wrote, “I have the best husband and son in the world.”
But since then, their relationship went sour and the custody battle was so contentious that they had to meet and drop off Kirill at the 17th Precinct stationhouse when their time with him was over.
A law enforcement source told the Post that Bukharina is “a mess” and she did say that he previously “threatened to kill himself and then kill our child.”
