The Christmas weekend box office was dominated by holdovers The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug and Frozen, with newcomers offering little competition.
Desolation took the No. 1 slot with a weekend haul of $29.9 million. The Hobbit sequel has now grossed $190 million in three weeks. According to TV Guide, Disney's Frozen was right behind with $28.8 million.
The animated film has now earned $247.4 million since being released on Thanksgiving, showing remarkable life at the box office.
Anchorman 2: The Legend Continues had a fairly strong box office haul with $20.2 million and David O. Russell's American Hustle was on its tail in fourth with $19.6 million. USA Today reports that Hustle now has a cumulative gross of $60 million since its release three weeks ago.
Martin Scorsese's The Wolf of Wall Street managed to crack fifth place as a newcomer with $18.5 million. Much lower was the new Secret Life of Walter Mitty, which starred Ben Stiller, but only took in $13 million. Unsurprisingly, 47 Ronin bombed out with $9.9 million, which likely guarantees the movie loses most of its $175 million budget.
The last new film of the weekend, the Robert De Niro and Sylvester Stallone movie Grudge Match only managed to take $7.3 million.
