Universal Studios has got to be on cloud nine today after today’s news that Despicable Me 2 set home video release records on DVD, Blu-ray and digital copy formats. The studio said today that consumers spent $80 million on copies of the film.

The film, which again features Steve Carell as Gru, had 4.5 million copies sold just in its first week, reports Deadline. It has sold more copies in its first week on Blu-ray than any other animated film, beating a record set by the original film in 2010. It also topped the digital copy sales, with best first-week numbers overall.

Craig Kornblau, President of Universal Studios Home Entertainment, praised Illumination Entertainment’s Chris Meledandri and his team for creating the hit franchise, reports TheWrap.

Despicable Me 2’s astonishing results across both packaged media and digital underscores the resounding demand among consumers of all ages to have instant access to the film anytime, anywhere and cements it as one of the greatest must-own movies ever,” Kornblau said.

When Despicable Me 2 was in theaters, the film grossed $918.8 million worldwide and is the year’s top grossing animated film. Adding in the success of Despicable Me and the franchise is up to $1.5 billion worldwide.

There are plans for a Minions spin-off from Illumination.
