Dwayne Johnson appeared in three films this year, propelling him to the top spot on Forbes’ list of top-grossing actors. The wrestler-turned-action star narrowly beat out Robert Downey Jr., who starred in the top-grossing movie of the year, Iron Man 3.
Johnson’s 2013 success is mostly thanks to Fast & Furious 6, which grossed $789 million worldwide. However, as Forbes notes, Johnson also appeared in G.I. Joe: Retaliation and Pain & Gain. Neither of those films were huge successes at the box office, but they were enough to put Johnson past Downey. The three films grossed a combined $1.3 billion, just ahead of Iron Man 3’s $1.2 billion. Maybe if Downey found his way into one other movie this year, he would have taken the top spot.
Downey shouldn’t be too angry at Johnson though. He did top the list last year thanks to The Avengers. In July, he topped the magazine’s list of highest paid actors, earning $75 million from June 2012 to June 2013. That’s $29 million more than what Johnson earned in the same time period.
Ranking third on the list of top-grossing actors may be surprising, since it’s former Office star Steve Carell. The comedian’s films made $964 million, mostly because of Despicable Me 2. The Incredible Burt Wonderstone and The Way Way Back also helped out, although they didn’t light up the box office.
The rest of the Top 10 includes:
Vin Diesel (Fast & Furious; $887 million)
Sandra Bullock (Gravity, The Heat; $862 million)
Paul Walker (Fast & Furious; $789 million)
Billy Crystal & John Goodman (Monsters University; $743 million)
Chris Hemsworth (Rush, Thor: The Dark World; $701 million)
Jennifer Lawrence (The Hunger Games: Catching Fire; $700 million)
