A new study by the University of Miami says that Florida contains more tanning salons than McDonald’s or CVS.
The doctors are studying whether skin cancer can be traced to certain geographic areas. Although the state has the nickname, The Sunshine State, the tanning beds are even more harmful for ones skin.
The Miami Herald reports that indoor tanning has been linked to both melanoma and non-melanoma skin cancer. There is a tanning salon about every 50 square miles, making that one tanning salon for every 15,113 people.
The number of tanning beds is concerning for the doctors that conducted this study, according to The Huffington Post. The melanoma risk for a person who starts tanning before the age of 35 jumps 59 percent.
Florida has the second highest melanoma rate in the country. Aside from the fact that it IS Florida and they have a lot of sun as it is, there are 1,261 tanning salons that encourage people to stop in and tan.
The business has become one of the fastest growing industries in America. “Increasing use by adolescents is a concern,” said the researchers in their findings. More than 1 million Americans tan indoors every day and 28 million tan indoors each year.
