If the 2016 election was held today, polls show that it would be Hilary Clinton and Chris Christie in the running to become the next president of the United States.

According to a poll led by CNN/ORC, 48 percent of registered voters currently say that they would support Gov. Christie, while 46 percent say that they would support Clinton, former secretary of state, governor and first lady. The 2 percent lead is within the margin of error for the poll, essentially tying the two candidates.

Christie has his strong points, leading in the independent vote. However, there is a clear gender gap in votes. Christie has a 14 point lead with men, while Clinton has a 10 point lead with the women.

The Staten Island Advance reports that it is still too early to tell. Clinton is quite popular with Staten Island Democrats, however, Christie has also been favored for quite some time.

Clinton also leads eight other GOP presidential hopefuls, like Rep. Paul Ryan and Sen. Marco Rubio.

However, it is also pointed out that polls taken this early are heavily weighted on name recognition.

The CNN poll was conducted between December 16-19 with 950 registered voters across the nation who were questioned over the phone. The sampling error was plus or minus three percentage points.
