Don Mitchell, who played alongside Raymond Burr in the original Ironside series, died on Sunday of natural causes at the age of 70.

Mitchell portrayed Mark Sanger who worked with Burr's character during the original eight season run of Ironside during the 1960s and 1970s on NBC, according to Variety. He returned to the role in the 1993 TV movie The Return of Ironside.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Mitchell's character was an ex-con who was hired by Ironside to be both his driver and assistant.

Mitchell, who went to college at UCLA, also appeared in numerous small roles for several TV shows, including The Fugitive, I Dream of Jeannie, Wonder Woman and Matlock. He also acted with Pam Grier as a police officer in the film Scream Blacula Scream.

NBC attempted to revive Ironside with Blair Underwood in the role of Ironside this fall, but the show lasted all of four episodes before the network pulled the plug due to low ratings.
