Joaquin Phoenix, who has preferred to star in acclaimed dramas helmed by top directors as of late, may get a chance to do something much bigger. He was reportedly offered a role in Warner Bros.’ Batman vs. Superman, but it’s still unknown what role he would play.
Sources for Variety claim that the Her actor has been offered a mysterious part, but it is in the very early stages of casting. The site notes that if Phoenix does take a part, the Oscar-nominated actor would not only add some prestige to the project, but he would also take on a major role. That could be as big as the main villain, Lex Luthor.
Jason Momoa’s name has also come up for a mysterious part, but it’s not likely that he’d get the top villain role, notes Variety. The site adds that Callan Mulvey has also been linked to the project.
The only recent confirmed casting news for Batman vs. Superman lately has been that Gal Gadot will be Wonder Woman. That’s a sign that Warner Bros. is looking to introduce more DC characters to the world created in Man of Steel. The movie will also introduce a new Batman, played by Ben Affleck.
It is worth noting that Phoenix has not been one to sign on for major studio projects as of late. His recent films have been prestige affairs, like last year’s The Master by Paul Thomas Anderson and this year’s Her by Spike Jonze. He did earn an Oscar nomination for The Master and is likely to get one again for Her, since he’s been earning rave reviews.
Phoenix’s next film is Inherent Vice, which Anderson is directing. He also starred in James Gray’s The Immigrant, which is expected to be released next year.
