John Eisenhower, the son of President Dwight D. Eisenhower, an accomplished historian and military veteran himself, has died. He was 91.
His family confirmed that Eisenhower died Saturday at his Trappe, Maryland home, according to the New York Times. He was the oldest living child of an American president.
Eisenhower was born in Denver on Aug. 3, 1922 and was Dwight D. Eisenhower’s second son. His father and mother, Mamie Doud Eisenhower, had a previous child who died at age 3 from scarlet fever, notes The Associated Press.
Eisenhower served in the Army in World War II and in the Korean War, graduating from West Point on June 6, 1944, the same day his father announced the D-Day landings. He retired as a brigadier general after 19 years of active service.
He did serve in the White House under his father as an adviser during his second term. He began to make a name for himself as an author, publishing The Bitter Woods in 1969, about the Battle of the Bulge. Shortly after his father’s death that year, he was named the ambassador to Belgium.
His other books include So Far from God: The U.S. War With Mexico, 1846-1848, Strictly Personal and General Ike: A Personal Reminiscence.
Eisenhower is survived by his second wife, Joanne, and four children.
