Justin Bieber has been releasing a new single every Monday, calling the singles “digital journals.” This Monday marked the end of the 10-week journal entry session. Bieber released “Confident” which features rapper Chance.
“Confident” explains Bieber’s attraction to a modern day mystery woman. The single features Bieber’s typically vocal style and has the hip-hop influences that have been heard on other tracks like “Roller Coaster” and “PYD,” which featured R. Kelly.
It is clear that the teen pop star is trying to push some musical boundaries and move beyond the days of preteen pop music. At times “Confident” feels caught in the middle of those worlds. The single is trying to be a sexy pop single but lyrics include “Tattoos, piercings and she just learned to twerk.” In order to full move into more adult pop driven music, Bieber will have to focus on advancing his lyrics and emotional delivery in the song past what he did on former albums.
Chance does bring in a unique flavor with his versus on "Confident," but does not have the hard hitting rap delivery that one would hope for to compliment the smooth sound of Bieber.
Overall, "Confident" is going in the right direction for Bieber but fans will have to wait until 2014 to see how the rest of his musical evolution will play out.
Bieber will be releasing all of these digital journals along with five additional tracks on iTunes titled Journals, reported Billboard.
