Marvel has finally confirmed that World War Z writer Drew Goddard will work on the planned Netflix Daredevil series.
It was rumored last month that Goddard would be the top pick to oversee the series. That made perfect sense, since the writer is an admitted Daredevil fan.
Today, Marvel issued a statement confirming that Goddard will write and direct the first episode, which will set the tone for the series. Goddard will stay on as executive producer and showrunner for the remaining 13-episode run.
Marvel, Disney and Netflix announced their partnership on Nov. 7. In addition to Daredevil, the studio will produce series starring Jessica Jones, Iron Fist and Luke Cage for the streaming service, leading up to a Defenders miniseries. Each series will have 13 episodes and are expected to debut in 2015, the year that Avengers: Age of Ultron hits theaters.
Goddard should be a familiar name for Joss Whedon fans, since he has worked with the Avengers writer/director Buffy The Vampire Slayer and Cabin in the Woods. He also co-wrote World War Z and the script for Steven Spielberg’s Robopocalypse, which is on hold indefinitely.
The film rights to Daredevil previously belonged to Fox, but Marvel and Disney got the character back in April since Fox didn’t do anything with Daredevil since the 2003 film flopped. Fox still has the film rights to the X-Men and Fantastic Four.
