Universal has selected former animator Michael Gracey to direct the big screen adaptation of Laini Taylor's bestselling novel Daughter of Smoke and Bone.

Variety reports that Taylor and her manager Jane Putch will executive produce alongside Joe Roth and Palek Patel. The script was written by Stuart Beattie (Collateral).

The plot follows a 17-year-old who is sent on errands around the world by her father and she becomes aware she is involved in a struggle between angels and demons. She also falls in love with an angel she meets.

Daughter of Smoke and Bone is just the latest young adult book to get picked up by a studio, The Hollywood Reporter notes. Taylor's book hit the top of several YA charts, including Amazon and Publishers Weekly. The second book in the trilogy, Days of Blood & Starlight was both a USA Today and New York Times bestseller and named a 2012 Best Book by Publishers Weekly and Amazon.

The last book in the trilogy Dreams of Gods and Monsters will be released in spring 2014.
