A posthumous Johnny Cash album will be released ten years after the legendary singer’s death. Out Among the Stars was recorded with Billy Sherrill in the early ‘80s.
Columbia Records never released the album and it vanished when the label dropped him in 1986. Cash and his wife June Carter Cash apparently held onto it because they kept everything, said their son John Carter Cash.
"They never threw anything away," Cash told The AP of his parents. "They kept everything in their lives. They had an archive that had everything in it from the original audio tapes from 'The Johnny Cash Show' to random things like a camel saddle, a gift from the prince of Saudi Arabia."
The new album wasn’t found until last year and it will be available starting March 25. It was recorded from ‘81 and '84 sessions when Cash was at a crossroads in his career and country music was changing.
His son explained, "Dad was always uniquely himself. And he later on the world would come back around. He never modified himself.” He also called the 12-track album a “beautiful record that nobody has ever heard” noting his father was “in the very prime of his voice for his lifetime.”
Back in June, a Johnny Cash “Johnny Cash Forever” U.S. postage stamp was sold in Nashville.
