A recent study says that Ohio residents are the most foul-mouthed Americans and even ranks among the least courteous states in the union. People in Washington are actually the least swearing Americans while the most courteous states are in the South, showing off the renowned Southern Hospitality.

Back in May, ad firm Marchex did a study examining 600,000 phone calls place to businesses in the last 12 months. The firm’s Institute looked at how often all swear words - including those that begin with A, F and S - and looked at how frequently they were used in each of the 50 states.

Ohioans came in first, cursing once every 150 conversations. The Buckeye state beat out Maryland, New Jersey, Louisiana and Illinois on the list of most foul-mouthed states.

Meanwhile, Washingtonians are much nicer on the West Coast. They only curse every 300 conversations. The state beat out Massachusetts, Arizona, Texas and Virginia.

Ohio was fifth on the list of least courteous states, getting beat out by Wisconsin, Massachusetts, Indiana and Tennessee. The list of most courteous states includes South Carolina, North Carolina, Maryland, Louisiana and Georgia. So, Southern Hospitality is real.

Marchex completed the survey back in May, during National Etiquette Week. However, it is just going viral now, with sites like The Atlantic and Today.com picking up on it.
