Spike Lee’s remake Oldboy disappointed at the box office over the holiday weekend. The remake only pulled in about $2 million for the five-day weekend. The film was only being shown in 583 locations.

This is one of the worst film openings of the year, with the film’s current per-screen average at about $3,000. This is one of the worst per-screen counts since, The Fifth Estate from Dreamworks and R.I.P.D. from Universal, reported Variety.

Oldboy stars Josh Brolin, Samuel L. Jackson and Elizabeth Olsen.

Oldboy had a very limited marketing budget and did not receive favorable reviews. The film currently has a rating of 43% on Rotten Tomatoes. The budget for the film was $30 million dollars.

This will be the last release for Film District, the company behind releasing Old Boy, before the company folds into Focus Features.

The LA Times added that Oldboy faced competition from The Hunger Games: Catching Fire and the animated musical Frozen from Disney. Catching Fire continued to find success and box office numbers over the holiday weekend.

Lee is known for his work on Do The Right Thing, Inside Man and Malcom X.
