The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) released a statement telling children and pregnant women not to consume raw milk.

The consumption of raw milk can lead to life-threatening bacterial infections according to the AAP press release. The organization also supports a ban on the sale of raw milk in the United States.

National Monitor reported that pasteurization, the heating of dairy products to at least 161 degrees Fahrenheit than rapidly cooled, kills bacteria such as E.coli and Salmonella.

While it is illegal to sell raw milk across state lines, it is legal to sell raw milk. Raw milk is sold in 30 states in the U.S.
