The Hobbit sequel hits theater Friday, but hopefully this Friday the Thirteenth brings good luck for Desolation of Smaug in the box office. The second installment in the Hobbit sequel is expected to bring in $80 million for its opening weekend and top the box office.
DOS opens in 3,903 U.S. theaters but will only open in 50 foreign markets, just a few shy from An Unexpected Journey’s number last year. According to The Wrap, the studio delayed its Latin America release until closer to Christmas. The film also won’t hit Japan until February, and won’t appear in China until 2014. However the film’s overseas revenue is expected to top the $700 million of the first.
According to the LA Times, box office runner-up is expected to be Terry Perry's A Madea Christmas, the latest comedy from producer Terry Perry. It is expected to make close to $28 million in ticket sales through Sunday.
The Hobbit: Desolation of Smaug,based on the beloved Tolkien book, follows Baggins and Gandalf and a group of dwarves as they try to retake The Lonely Mountain from the dragon Smaug, voiced by Benedict Cumberbatch. Cumberbatch also stars in Sherlock(BBC) with Martin Freeman, the actor who plays Bilbo Baggins.
