The Lion King has been named Broadway’s all time highest earner and has become the first Broadway show to pass one billion dollars in 2013.

According to BBC News, The Lion King is in its sixteenth year. Only Chicago, Cats and Phantom of the Opera have run longer on Broadway.

Zee News reported that The Lion King brought in $2.8 million in one week. The show has had $97 million in ticket sales alone, not including any merchandise.

The Lion King debuted on Broadway in 1997 and has been a very popular show ever since. It includes songs from Sir Elton John and Sir Tim Rice.

The Book of Mormon was named Broadway’s second highest earning play, making $90.4 million this year. Wicked also broke a record, earning $3.2 million in nine performances (one week).

The Lion King has also been shown in London and Sydney.

It was a year of record breaking sales on Broadway and the sixteen year old show shows no signs of leaving Broadway any time soon.
