The Writers Guild announced that The Wire creator David Simon will be receiving the Ian McClellan Hunter Award for Career Achievement in February at the 66th Annual Writers Guild Awards.

The Hunter Award was set up 11 years ago as a way to honor Guild members for their TV or film work, TheWrap reports. David Koepp, Frank Gilroy, Alan Zweibel, Claire Labine, Andrew Bergman and John Patrick Shanley have previously been honored.

Actor Wendell Pierce, who played Bunk in The Wire, will present Simon with the career achievement award.

Writers Guild of America, East, President said, "David Simon's distinguished career is a celebration of his ability to combine the street smarts of the cityside newspaper reporter he once was with the creative imagination of a novelist."

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Simon also created several other shows in addition to The Wire, including Treme, Generation Kill and Homicide: Life on the Street.

In 2010, He received the MacArthur Foundation "Genius Grant," because of his work as a screenwriter, producer and author.
