The New Year’s Eve celebration in Times Square in New York City is one of the largest celebrations in the world. In addition the countdown and the ball drop at midnight, more than 7,000 pounds of confetti will be dropped between 43rd and 48th Streets.
This is the work of Treb Heining whose company Treb, Inc. provides confetti and balloons for large events including national political conventions. According to Time Magazine, Treb has worked with the Times Square Alliance since 1991.
Heightened security is of key importance, and all precautions are being taken by the New York Police Department. Beginning at 3PM, Times Square will be closed to all vehicles. Backpacks are not allowed in the space. People streaming into New York City to enjoy the festivities will be checked before they stand behind the gates on the route on Broadway and Seventh Avenue.
According to the Daily News, Sergeants Benevolent Association President Ed Mullins said, “As they’re going into the pens they’re checked. Things can still happen, but the idea is you try to limit the potential of things happening.”
