Tom Cruise takes ‘Groundhog Day’ to a sci-fi level in the trailer for ‘Edge of Tomorrow’, the new Doug Liman movie starring Cruise and Emily Blunt.
With the tag line “Live, Die, Repeat” Cruise plays Lt. Col. Bill Cage who keeps repeating the same mission day after day, with nothing but defeat and death to look forward to. In the action packed trailer we keep seeing Lt. Cage go into the suicide mission until one time Special Forces Rita Vrataski (Emily Blunt) tells him to find her. After he starts to repeat his day, Cage finds Vrataski who is going through the same repetitive mission with him. They start to train together in order to maybe find some way to defeat their adversaries, which they are hoping will break the cycle of the repeating day.
The New York Daily News with a less than positive take suggests that the repetitive loop that Cruise experiences may be real, only in that the battle is reminiscent of Oblivion, the clone-battling-an-alien-army movie that also starred Cruise.
The Los Angeles Times notes the sci-fi action adventure is based on Hiroshi Sakurazaka’s award-winning novel “All You Need Is Kill” which has also been praised for it’s realistic view on war and military tactics.
Edge of Tomorrow hits theaters June 6, 2014.
