One officer was killed and the other critically injured during a bank robbery in Tupelo, Mississippi. Kevin “Gale” Stauffer, 38, was killed while another unnamed officer is still in critical condition.
A bank robbery call came in from Bancorp South and the two officers went to investigate. The officers confronted the suspects who fled and police began their pursuit which led to a gun fight. Stauffer was pronounced dead only thirty minutes after the robbery call came in.
“We are hurting; we are hurting very bad,” said Tupelo Police Chief Bart Aguirre notes the Daily Journal.
Authorities are looking for at least two suspects who are expected to still be in the Tupelo area.
Stauffer had been with the Tupelo Police Department since 2005. He leaves behind a wife and two young children notes USA Today.
Tupelo Mayor Jason Shelton asks for anyone having any information about the case to come forward. “And during this time, particularly this time of year, continued thoughts and prayers. When tragedies happen, we just have to come together as a city.”
One witness said she was in her car between police and a suspect when shot were fired. “The police told him to get back in the car, and the next thing I heard were shots.”
