UPS, the country’s largest delivery service, said late Tuesday that many packages that should have arrived by Christmas Day will not get to their destination on time. The company blamed a system overload.
“The volume of air packages in our system exceeded the capacity of our network, as demand was much greater than the forecast,” UPS spokeswoman Natalie Godwin said in a statement, reports USA Today. “As a result a small percentage of shipments are delayed and will not be delivered today.”
Goodwin didn’t say how many packages would be delayed, but the company is sure that many of the packages will arrive by Thursday, the day after Christmas, reports NBC News. There will be more employees working at the international air hub in Louisville, Kentucky tonight to make sure the shipments arrive.
Fox News reports that people waiting for packages from UPS in the Dallas-Fort Worth were actually allowed to pick up their packages at the company’s Fort Worth hub. Delivery there was delayed because of an ice storm earlier this month.
UPS will not have any drivers working on Christmas Day. USA Today notes that the company doesn’t have a guarantee that packages sent via ground shipping after Dec. 11 will arrive by Christmas Day.
