Terry Lee Loewen was accused and arrested for an alleged plot to detonate a car bomb at the Wichita airport.

The 58-year-old was charged with one count of attempting to use a weapon of mass destruction, attempting to provide support to the terrorist group al Qaeda and attempting to damage property, reports The Associated Press.

Loewen's apparent plan was to drive a car supposedly full of active explosives into an airport terminal. He is an avionics technician for the Wichita airport and had a key card that gave him some airport access.

He came under suspicion six months ago after making statements claiming that he wanted to commit "violent jihad" about the United States.

According to USA Today, Loewen was arrested when he attempted to drive onto an Mid-Continent Airport terminal early Friday morning.

The explosives were "rendered inert" before he even got to the airport, officials said. "At no point was any citizen in any type of danger," U.S. Attorney Barry Grissom confirmed.
