Christmas week was good for Broadway, especially the musical Wicked, which set a record for one-week sales.
The show managed to gross over $3 million and average $184.50 per ticket to set a record with the highest ever one-week gross, reports Variety.
Not to be outdone by the 10-year-old musical, the play Betrayal, starring Daniel Craig set a record for one-week sales for a play with over $1.4 million in sales, according to The New York Times. The Harold Pinter play broke the previous record, set just in April by Tom Hanks' Lucky Guy, by about $30.
All of Broadway saw immense sales, with 18 of 30 shows playing taking in over $1 million in sales for the week of Christmas. Two shows broke house records, The Lion King with nearly $2.9 million and The Book of Mormom with a little over $1 million.
Variety notes that an additional 45,000 seats were filled, up to a total of 290,386 people seeing shows during the week.
Though tourists are undoubtedly to account for the extra sales, Broadway was helped by some shows being able to charge high ticket prices and Wicked was helped by the Gershwin theater being able to open up an additional 119 seats not normally available.
