The Australian Academy of Cinema and Television Arts had a spectacular ceremony, honoring some of the best filmmakers in Australia. Baz Luhrmann’s The Great Gatsby won Best Film, Best Director, and several other trophies on Thursday.
It was a tremendous year for The Great Gatsby, released in 2013. Leonardo DiCaprio also won for Best Lead Actor, Elizabeth Debicki won for Best Supporting Actress, and Joel Edgerton took home the award for Best Supporting Actor. Gatsby also earned the win for Best Adapted Screenplay. The Great Gatsby also made a strong showing at the technical awards on Tuesday, according to Variety.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Gatsby’s primary competition was Kim Mordaunt's Laotian-language Oscar contestant, The Rocket, nominated in twelve categories. The Australian Academy honors extraordinary efforts in film and television. Other winners during the ceremony included Top of the Lake, The Turning, Please Like Me, and The Rocket.
Other moments of the evening included Jacki Weaver presented with the AACTA Raymond Longford Award. The award show also boasted a glitzy musical tribute to Luhrmann’s "Red Curtain" films, Strictly Ballroom, Moulin Rouge, Romeo and Juliet, and The Great Gatsby.
