When the Atlantic Club Casino Hotel closed its doors at midnight on Monday, 1600 hundred jobs went with it.
According to the Associated Press, the 33-year-old casino had been struggling for years and after not being able to finder a buyer, filed for bankruptcy in November.
The casino was eventually sold for $23.4 million to two competitors who will strip it for parts and close it down, the AP notes.
The small casino could no longer compete with the much newer and larger casinos that light up the Atlantic City skyline. The city now has 11 gaming halls left.
Fox 29 News has reported that per the company’s website, customers still holding onto chips or tokens after midnight will have to file a "proof of claim" with the U.S. Bankruptcy Court of New Jersey.
As midnight approached the casino was just about empty except for the few employees who embraced one another before the casino closed its doors for good.
