Police arrested the man who killed California priest Eric Freed in Northern California this Thursday.
Police Chief Andy Mills told CNN that the suspect, Gary Lee Bullock, was arrested in the southern part of Humboldt County near Garberville.
A deacon found Freed dead in the St. Bernard rectory after he failed to arrive for morning mass on Wednesday. Authorities believe he died sometime on Tuesday. Police were looking for the man who might have killed this beloved priest. They were unsure of the motive for the murder, but they thought it was robbery.
Freed taught religion classes at Humboldt State University. Stephen Cunha, head of Humboldt's department of religious studies told Reuters, "This is a real tragedy. His major concern was social justice ... he lived it, he preached it, he taught it."
Freed grew up in Southern California and attended Loyola Marymount University. Reverend Eric Freed served St. Bernard Parish. He was a well-respected lecturer and community leader. He had a wide range of interests, and taught about the New Testament. He was deeply involved in the Catholic student groups.
