Former First Lady Barbara Bush was hospitalized on Monday for a respiratory ailment.
Bush, 88, was admitted to Houston Methodist Hospital in Texas. Jim McGrath, a spokesman for the Bushes told The New York Times, “She is in great spirits, has already received visits from her husband and family, and is receiving fantastic care.”
The Bush family was able to enjoy watching college football on New Year’s Eve. Former President George Bush, 89, and the first lady enjoyed cheering for Texas A&M as the Aggies played the Duke University Blue Devils.
According to Reuters, Mrs. Bush has been evaluated every day and a day has not yet been set for her discharge.
Mrs. Bush has taken on a number of causes over the years. She has promoted literacy in schools through the Bush Foundation for Family Literacy. She has also written memoirs of her days at the White House.
Always known as a strong, calm guiding force during her years in Washington, Barbara Bush is the mother of George W. Bush, who was the 43rd President of the United States.
