King, the company that created the well known Candy Crush Saga, has taken their dedication to the game a step farther. The U.S. Patent and Trademark Office approved the company’s application asking to trademark the word “candy”.
According to Yahoo, the approval of the company’s application is ony the first step. King must now wait 30 days for companies who oppose their application to file a complaint or request an extension. The company has already been approved for trademark of the word in Europe.
The company insists that they do not plan on using the patent to enforce all uses of the word, but rather to stop imitators who are trying to recreate their game on the App Store. A company spokesman stated that they do not want their customers to be confused by misleading games made by competitors.
If King receives approval for trademark of the word “candy” in the U.S., according to Polygon, the company will have exclusive rights to use of the word to games, clothing, amusement parks and more.
Once the 30 days has passed, the application must then be approved by the assigned examining attorney.
