Joe and Anthony Russo will return behind the camera when Marvel Studios begins shooting Captain America 3. A report suggests that the film is already coming together, even though The Winter Soldier hasn’t even opened yet.
Variety reported this afternoon that the Russo brothers will make the next Captain America film. They were picked to direct The Winter Soldier, even though their experience mostly included comedies like the Owen Wilson movie You, Me & Dupree and the NBC sitcom Community.
Sources for Variety say that Marvel was very impressed with how The Winter Soldier turned out, so the moment the movie is released, formal talks will start to get them back on board. Marvel’s Kevin Feige will produce and star Chris Evans is signed on for another film.
The sequel hasn’t gotten the green light yet, but Marvel is clearly moving fast so it can make that decision if Winter Soldier is a hit.
Back in October, when the first Winter Soldier trailer hit, the Russos said in an interview that they aimed to make the movie like a 1970s political thriller, rather than a traditional action movie.
“There's nobody better at that kind of stuff than Marvel if you're going to attempt to pull that off and go for it,” Joe Russo told USA Today at the time. “We all tried to up the ante with what happens in this movie in terms of what's come before, and I think we've done that.”
Captain America: The Winter Soldier hits theaters on April 4.
