Chinese cinema operators added over 5,000 cinema screens in the year 2013. China has recently been experiencing a surge of moviegoers and an increase demand for more movie theaters.
China now has over 4,582 cinema complexes and 18,195 screens. This has been an increase of 25% and 39% respectively, Variety reported. These numbers include the recent opening of 903 new mega complexes.
The Chinese box office has seen an increase in ticket sales. Sales have increased by 32% since last year. The box office total for 2012 was 462 million and this past years sale was over 612 million.
This increase in cinema visits is widely assumed to continue as more cinemas open across the country in the new few years, including IMAX screens.
In the United States and Canada, there are 42,000 movie screens operating at the end of 2012.
Recently American films have been doing very well overseas at the China box office. Despicable Me 2 which was just released in China made over $15.37 million in its first three days, The Hollywood Reporter added.
Films like Thor: The Dark World, Gravity and The Hunger Games: Catching Fire also did very well at the Chinese box office.
