Counting Crows are just the next in a long line of artists taking their label Universal Music Group to court over unpaid royalties for their songs in a digital format.
According to The Hollywood Reporter the “Mr. Jones” hit-makers filed a suit against the label regarding royalties off of venues such as iTunes as licensing rather than sales. The difference is substantial considering the band would receive 50% share from licensing, and only 15% for a sale. Many other artists have filed similar complaints such as Kenny Rogers, Rob Zombie, Peter Frampton and George Clinton.
TMZ noted Counting Crows filed the suit for one million dollars, which also includes royalties gained from ringtone downloads as well.
According to updates from the band’s Twitter account throughout the last 6 months, the band have been writing and recording for a new album, their follow-up to their last album of original material Saturday Nights & Sunday Mornings in 2008. Song titles released on social media include "Dislocation," "Earthquake Driver," "God of Ocean Tides," and "Palisades Park." The band anticipates finishing the recording process for the yet-untitled album by February.
