Despicable Me 2 has been out in theaters for about six months but has just now arrived in China. The film opened on Friday and has made $4 million.
Deadline reported that this is the first major United States film to open in China in 2014 and opened on 3,000 screens, 141 of those screens being IMAX.
Despicable Me 2 helped to earn Universal their largest first-day grossing total for an animated movie since Ice Age 4 was released overseas in China.
Despicable Me was never released in China, so it is surprising that the sequel is doing so well, Variety added.
With the film now opening in China, it has brought the globe box office total to $935 million, making Despicable Me 2 the fourth highest grossing animated featuring, behind Toy Story 3 and The Lion King and Finding Nemo.
The film did very well in other territories including the United States, where the film made an estimated $367,212,050.
