On Sunday’s new episode of the thriving series Good Luck Charlie, the Disney channel series premiered the first lesbian couple seen in the series. Accordingly, Disney made a statement in June of 2013 saying that the first homosexual couple would be premiered on the child-oriented television show.
According toThe Daily Mail, a spokesperson from the Disney Channel made several statements earlier in June to TV Guide regarding this new step to equality.
"Like all Disney Channel programming, it was developed to be relevant to kids and families around the world and to reflect themes of diversity and inclusiveness,” the spokesperson said. The network was also careful in the planning of the episode saying, “This particular storyline was developed under the consultancy of child development experts and community advisors.”
HollywoodLife noted the positive reactions fans and avid watchers of the program posted on Twitter. The storyline featured a play-date with Charlie’s friend Taylor. When Taylor’s parents came to drop her off and introduce themselves, two moms entered the front door to proudly make their debut.
However, The Daily Mail reported that the group One Millions Moms, who attempted to ban Ellen DeGeneres from a spokesperson position, “condemned” the episode due to the exposure of the gay couple. Organizers reportedly said, “Conservative families need to urge Disney to avoid controversial topics that children are far too young to comprehend.”
Nevertheless, the series was extremely successful in exposing the much-debated topic in a pure and understandable manner. Much with the fans and admirers of the show, Disney Channel is being commended by viewers and non-viewers alike everywhere for their show of support.
