A study carried out by a group of researchers from Aalto University in Finland has been able to make connections between emotions and how they affect the body.

The study has been published in the Proceedings of The National Academy of Sciences. 700 individuals from Finland, Taiwan and Sweden were studied.

Top News reports that the study found that most emotions trigger body sensations. Each emotion has been shown to trigger a different sensation.

The Financial Express described some of the connections. Like if you have fallen in love, you may feel warm all over, but if you are feeling anxious, you may experience chest pain.

The findings were consistent across the map, no matter where the person was from, which led researchers to believe that emotions and bodily sensation were linked on a biological basis.

Professor Lauri Nummenmaa said, “Emotions adjust not only our mental, but also our bodily states. This way they prepare us to react swiftly to the dangers, but also to the opportunities such as pleasurable social interactions.”

"Most basic emotions were associated with sensations of elevated activity in the upper chest area, likely corresponding to changes in breathing and heart rate," the researchers said in Proceedings of The National Academy of Sciences. Happiness triggered sensation all over the body.

These findings are crucial to really understand the function of human emotion. This study should also be able to provide better incite into emotional disorders and faster diagnosis.
